I’m back with another edition of the Made In… Series, where I explore where and how tall brands make or source their clothes. This time, we’re headed to Edmonton Canada where the fabulous boutique Hye Fashion is located. I had the pleasure of chatting via email with Katie, the store and marketing manager, and she provided a wealth of information about all of the tall clothing from Hye Fashion. Read on to learn more.
Background on Hye Fashion and Its 6-Foot Founder
Hye Fashion is a Women’s Fashion Boutique in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada that focuses on offering fun, stylish clothing available to women of every height, age, body type, and style! We bring in Canadian-made goods and support ethical manufacturing, wherever possible!
Our 6-ft-tall founder, Janel, had always been frustrated with the lack of fashionable options available for her tall frame. Prior to opening Hye Fashion, she earned her Masters in Molecular Genetics and worked for a number of years in academia. Though this field was fascinating, Janel wasn’t fulfilled – she needed to help people directly. Janel’s drive to make her world better by helping people feel good about themselves through fashion, in combination with her own unique, tall fashion challenges, opened her eyes to owning her own fashion boutique focusing on just that – helping the everyday woman feel amazing!
Hye Fashion’s Commitment to Responsibly Made Items
At Hye Fashion, we strongly believe in the ethical manufacturing of quality goods and love to support fellow Canadian designers and manufacturers whenever we can! Many of our brands are designed and produced in Canada. One of the many things we love about our Canadian brands is their innate understanding that Canadian women come in all shapes, sizes and heights. For this reason, many of our Canadian designed lines are created in a way that can work beautifully for any woman. We love being able to source products from other like-minded businesses that put the same quality and care into their products as we do into every client who walks through our door! Although not every line Hye Fashion carries is produced in Canada, we are conscientious of where our product comes from and how it is made.
Made-in-Canada Tall Fashion Brands
We have a Montreal-based brand called Raffinalla, which has been manufacturing in Canada for two generations. Raffinalla and Hye Fashion have partnered to create a custom-made, impeccable line of tall work wear (including dress pants with 37” inseams) custom built specifically for Hye Fashion. Hye Fashion’s Raffinalla styles are incredibly comfortable, made with premiere quality, and fits that work for women of all shapes, ages, and sizes.
Another fantastic Canadian company we work with is a brand called Sympli. Sympli designs and manufactures near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and offers easy, comfortable clothing made from an incredible jersey fabric. Every piece in their collection is built with the utmost care, from the highest quality fabrics and creates a unique sense of style. We are astounded by the diversity (age, size and height) in our clients who love this brand!
We also work with other clothing manufacturers based in Montréal, including Yoga Jeans, who creates stretchy, shape-retaining jeans (you could literally do yoga in them!), as well as Lisette L Montréal who create fantastic garments that can transition from the office to the weekend in a snap!
Hye Fashion also carries a variety of fashion-forward accessories that our clients can feel great about purchasing! TINK Jewelry is a handmade, Canadian jewelry line that creates contemporary pieces with extra length specifically for Hye Fashion! In addition, BERG + BETTS watches is a Victoria, BC, Canada based brand that creates sustainable timepieces from scrap leather that would otherwise be considered waste. These gorgeous watches are all assembled in Canada!
Last but not least, our favourite belt brand, UNBELTS (formerly known as Flatter:Me Belts) is an Edmonton, Alberta, Canada- based company that is a huge advocate and driving force for progressive manufacturing. The designer, Claire Theaker-Brown completed her post-secondary education at the University of Alberta and moved to Shanghai, China for a Practicum. While Claire was living in Shanghai, China she first began producing these fully adjustable, no-bump belts and has an extremely interesting take on the “Made In” revolution. Claire now lives back at home in Edmonton with her husband and young daughter and continues to manufacture to atypically high standards in Shanghai. For example, Claire pays her tailors three times the minimum wage in China! You can check out her story here.
Thanks so much to Katie for giving us so many fun and interesting details about Hye Fashion. One of my goals is to travel around Canada someday and I’m thinking a stop in Edmonton will be a must after seeing all of these fabulous outfits on offer at this boutique. Here are a few more of my favorite pieces from Hye.
