When was the last time a garment REALLY thrilled you? Like you bought something and then you found yourself literally wanting to wear it every single day (except then I guess it would get a little stinky). That’s how I feel about my latest purchase – an extra-fine Merino wool sweater dress from the Serbian brand IVKO – and it’s such a good feeling. This is how I want to feel about ALL of my purchases!
Remember how I mentioned I’d found that really cool fair trade shop in my area which not only sold some great brands but also made its own clothing right there in the shop? I stopped by there again a few weeks ago and tried on a bunch of stuff. The owner was there this time and it turns out she is also tall! What are the odds?! She was super helpful in selecting pieces that would look good on my long frame including the tunic featured in this post. This is my first purchase of a “non-tall” fair trade item and, while I’d prefer the sleeves to be a little longer, I feel like the overall fit is quite good.
If you read my recent post about the 4 types of items I’m focusing on buying in 2017, you know that tunics and prints are 2 of the 4 things on the list, and I am so thrilled that this unique Ivko piece ticks both of those boxes. IVKO is based in Serbia and, according to its website “specializes in designing and creating high class woven and knitted garments combining exceptional craftsmanship with state of the art knitting technology…using only the finest natural fabrics and fibers.” The colors and patterns of most IVKO pieces are quite bold making the pieces eye-catching and unique. The piece I selected can be worn either as a tunic over skinny jeans or as a sweater dress over tights. For a day out in Bordeaux, I wore it in the latter style. I am seriously in love with the patterns and color combos – grey, yellow, pink, salmon. So fun!
Two shades of grey with little pops of color? Yes please!
I’ve only had this sweater dress for a month but may or may not have already worn it out to dinner, to work, on the weekend, on a wine tour and more. Don’t judge…I just can’t get enough! I always thought of wool as thick, itchy and warm but after buying this top, I learned that the extra-fine Merino wool is so soft, comfortable and breathable. I just love the way I look and feel in this top! It’s a bit shorter as a dress than I would normally wear but with the long sleeves and the high neckline, I feel like I can get away with showing some leg.
It was a wee bit breezy so forgive the hair and focus on the cheery colors!
One of my favorite details of the top is the salmon colored circular design on the upper left shoulder!
I actually wish IVKO had info on its website about where it sources its wool as I recently learned that there have been some issues with the way some Merino sheep are treated. I hope IVKO is only using wool from happy sheep! Perhaps I will reach out to IVKO to see if I can get more info or I will ask the owner of the fair trade shop the next time I see her. Overall, I am very happy with this brand and will be keeping an eye out for more unique pieces to add to my closet.
Note: I bought this item with my own pennies.
