It’s no secret that I love to travel. Two years ago, I was planning for a week long visit to Asia and I began scouring the internet for the perfect travel tote with the hopes that I could get away with only taking carry-on luggage. After hours of research, I ordered the Lo & Sons O.G. tote bag. I am happy to say that between this bag and a roller suitcase, I have avoided checking any bags on several flights thus saving me tons of time and money. After two years of carting this bag around 3 continents and numerous countries, I decided it was high time I tell you all about it (especially since it is now 30% off through Monday, November 30).
The Lo & Sons Story
I love the story of Lo & Sons. After the search for the perfect travel tote proved elusive for avid traveler Helen Lo, her two sons encouraged her to invent her own. Helen was in her mid-60s and didn’t have any handbag design experience when she began dreaming up the travel bags. Her sons quit their day jobs to help Helen launch the company and, several years later, L&S now has an amazing line of bags in various sizes for both men and women.
Why is the O.G. bag good for tall ladies?
Here’s why I think this bag is the best travel tote for me me as a tall woman. I’ve had a cranky, achy back since I was a teenager and I know a lot of other tall people with chronic back pain. Guess what? L&S founder Helen Lo also has back problems which is one of many reasons why she eventually set out to design the perfect, lightweight travel tote. I can honestly say that the bag doesn’t break my back and is very comfortable to carry thanks to its low weight (only 2.2 lbs) and its high quality, comfy leather straps. If I am taking a trip with carry-on luggage only, I don’t have to carry the tote at all since the adjustable back panel sleeve allows my O.G. to perch happily atop my suitcase thus saving my back altogether.
Another reason this bag is a winner in my tall book is that the tote has a nifty side pocket for stowing shoes. Thankfully, this side pocket is generously sized and my size US11 shoes fit in the space with room to spare. Believe it or not, I’ve even managed to stuff boots into this compartment!
Fabric, Hardware, Colors
I think my O.G. (which stands for “overnight” and “gym”) bag looks pretty good after two years of wear and tear, don’t you? The fine-weave water resistant nylon is so easy to keep clean and has also proven to be quite durable. As for the interior, it is made from L&S’s signature hummingbird poly jacquard in a lovely lavender color. The handles and trim are made from high quality, durable leather and the bag features attractive gold hardware. If gold isn’t your thing, some of the bags feature silver hardware.
Pockets, pockets, pockets (and a nifty key leash)
Who wants to frantically rummage through their bag for their passport, wallet, cell phone or keys? Not me! One of the drawbacks of carrying a big bag is that it can often feel like an endless abyss where items get swallowed up and it takes a monumental effort to retrieve them. The carefully thought out pockets in the O.G. tote solve this problem. There’s a place for everything so everything can be in its place.
In the main section of the bag, there’s a padded laptop compartment, a tablet (or document) pocket, two smaller (but still generously sized) pockets and an interior zippered pocket.
In the front zippered section of the O.G. tote, there are several pockets which can be used for a passport, cell phone, pens (or whatever else you want to tuck in there), an interior zippered pocket (which adds a nice layer of security) and a long key leash (which I adore). When I go on trips, I clip my keys to the leash and forget about them until its time to get back into the apartment.
Long story short, this tote is not short on pockets and organizational capabilities which is yet another reason why I feel like it’s the best travel tote for an “organized chaos” type of person like me.
What fits inside and does it fit under airline seats?
Speaking of pockets, here’s a look at what I fit in the tote for a recent trip.
- 13″ MacBook Air
- Chargers for the 3 devices listed above
- Ballet flats
- Eyeglasses case
- Facial tissues and gum
- Small makeup bag
- Water bottle (not pictured)
- Snacks (not pictured)
So far, I’ve had no problem fitting the O.G. tote bag under the seat in front of me (and I have been on some SMALL planes in the last 2 years).
The Bottom Line on the Lo & Sons OG Bag
While this bag is a bit pricey, the investment has definitely been worth it for a frequent traveler like me. After two years, the bag doesn’t show any signs of wearing out and I look forward to using it for years to come.
Do you have a favorite travel tote or any other travel “must-haves”? Do you usually take carry-on luggage only or do you check your bags?
